Timber Fences

Timber fences are probably the cheapest and most versatile of all forms of fencing. They can be made to any height (subject to by-laws) and there are infinite design opportunities to suit your site and personal tastes.

Specifications

Pine is the most commonly used fencing timber. Mr Fencer specifies only pine from inland forests which tends to have straighter grains than coastally grown timber and therefore is less prone to bowing. Pine comes in different grades (the better ones clear of knots) and can be rough sawn (to be stained or left to weather naturally), or dressed (smoother for painting) so be sure to discuss all these aspects with us when planning your fence.

All posts and any other in-ground timber used by Mr Fencer is H-4 treated and above ground timber is H-3 treated for weather protection and durability. Our standard practice includes fixed post-hole depths and concrete volume relative to fence height to ensure your fence stays straight and true. Only rust-proof galvanised nails and fittings are used. Be sure to check timber, hardware and construction specifications if you are comparing quotes from other suppliers.

Styles

Most solid timber fences are post and rail, with attached battens. Rails can be flush top and bottom with the battens, or inset. Battens can be attached in a number of ways - flush one side, alternating sides, vertical, horizontal or diagonal, overlapped, spaced or flush together. "Neighbour friendly" styles present a similar finished look on both sides of the fence.

Decorative trellis panels can be added at the top, can be inset between solid panels, or used for the entire fence. Similarly, flat fibrous cement or textured steel panels can be inserted as a feature or as a substitute for battens in post and rail fences, providing additional privacy and a modern look.

Picket fences are another option and present an attractive face to the street. Various shaped pickets are available and are usually painted.

We are also agents for Wooden Gates Waiuku who manufacture an exclusive range of high quality, pre-painted modern and traditional fences and gates.

In rural and lifestyle applications, post and rail fences are attractive, practical and in character.

Finishing touches

There are different treatment options on sloping or undulating sites, where the fence top can be cut level, can follow ground contours, or can be stepped between posts. The posts themselves can be cut level with the fence, can extend above it or can be decoratively capped in a variety of styles. If required, a concrete mowing strip can be laid between the posts before the fence is completed.

A number of different styles of wooden fences are shown here - there are many individual choices and your Mr Fencer representative can discuss all options with you, including suitable gates to complement your fence.
